Avola is about 23 Km from Syracuse and is divided into two sections, one on the sea and the other on the plains (Avola antica). Avola, constructed in the form of a winged snake, is a medieval town on Mount Aquilone, the end of the Ibleis mountains. All around are prehistoric ruins with ancient Sicilian oven tombs. The town was destroyed in 1693 by apocalyptic earthquake and was rebuilt on the plains near the coast. Avola is a residential area and is a good alternative to the sea thanks to its altitude (400 meters) and its luxuriant vegetation.
